Hello,

I am REALLY thinking about taking a travel assignment in NY. I am in Florida. I have been here most of my life and I am ready for some change and excitement.

What is nursing like in NY?? I was thinking about the Long Island area..honestly I am not sure...

Any suggestions--How are the travelers treated in NY??

Don't know if this reply is too late.... But I am a new grad and work in an OR in Manhattan, with several travelers. They are treated very well - at least by the other nurses and surgeons, residents, etc. I can't say how they're treated by management because I'm not a traveler. In fact, as a new employee I can't tell which are travelers and which are not, until they mention it. Several have re-signed contracts and stayed for a while, because they like it. At least one has come back for a second commitment after traveling elsewhere. From what I can tell, these travelers are very skilled and experienced, and so they are appreciated by their coworkers. one last thought - I have lived all over the country (before I was a nurse) including a small Ohio town, Boulder, CO, Baltimore, MD and Los Angeles. I really believe that living in NYC is an incredible life experience that everyone should do, if they have the inclination. If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere...! Good luck!

I worked with travel RNs previously in med/surg. I enjoyed being around them. Comparing hospitals from their home states. Many were from FL. One thing they all said was that their nurse/pt ratio was much lower in their home states. Also technology wise, there hospitals were ahead of NY hospitals.

They are usually treated well, but can get dumped on by mean staff nurses who consider them outsiders. For example, they would receive first admission each time, not be given a permanent district on the floor, given the worst pts, etc. Some staff nurses think its justified because as agency nurses they can't do narcotics count, accept charge duty etc. Sometimes there is envy because staff nurses know that the travel nurse is making way more hourly for the same work.

But there are bad apples where ever you go in life. Some travel nurses I know eventually accepted staff positions and stayed on. Give it a try. You will love NY.
