I had a similar question but, it has come up again.

I replied on a military forum that (question was about housing) that I was advised to not anticipate finding on base housing since I was single.

A vet replied that I would be "assigned" to BOQ, bachelor's officer quarters.

Hmmm, do I "have" to take that? I have three cats and have heard many times that bringing them on base may not be possible.

Once you have completed your basic tng and are permanently assigned, I think you will find that off base housing is preferable. Too many reasons to go into here. It's a psych thing, sort of like: don't take your work home with you. When you live on base, it is so easy for the military to get into your personal life, to the extent that you can find it intrusive. Most people prefer to live off base, so they have a better chance to "breathe" when they get home from work.

From what I understand, (at least in Navy) the BOQ is just temp until you find permanent housing. My husband and I lived in the Navy Lodge and the BOQ when we 1st got to SD while we were looking for a place. I've never heard of having to live in the BOQ.

I didn't apply for military housing b/c I was told the chances of me getting into it without kids was very slim, due to there being a shortage of housing. Our military housing here really isn't on base; its out among the community in San Diego (but its different for the Navy). However, I know in the army that most of housing in on base (my dad's retired army). I'm glad to get off base when its time to leave work; so I agree with the poster above about living off base.

I think the Army is the same as the AirForce in the regard of not using BOQ much anymore. You should plan on living off base. Officers are rarely made to live on base with the exception of commanders. The easiest way to find out is to call base housing office where you are going to be stationed and find out what is available. The housing department will also be able to give you assistance in finding appropriate housing. Also, there should be housing where you are going to that participates in the military rental partnership program.....The program allows a military member to move in w/o deposits.

You might ask your recruiter if your base is going to assign you a sponsor. A lot of times your base or supervisor to be will get in touch with you long before you are going to PCS and will help you out with all these details.

I do anticipate living off base, off post and in non military housing. This also was one of my very first question initially in this military forum at allnurses too! I have three cats and I know that many places will not allow three pets!
