This might sound like a silly question because I know for many the clinical experience is different, but I was thinking that this might help some of us who are getting "cold feet".

What was/is your clinical experience like? Particularily, those of you who work and go to school.

What is expected of nursing students?

I'm sure some of this will be discussed in class prior to entering the hospital, but any feedback, ways of coping, etc would be much apreciated.

Actually I will be able to tell you a little bit about clinicals after this weekend. I will be doing my first clinical on Postpartum and Newborn nursery. I've been in the nursing home to do vitals and histories as well as head to toe assessments but that environment is definatly different than the hospital. well wish me luck :roll Froggy

silly question, i think not....i can tell you about my lpn clinical, but i don't start my rn clinical until august.

clinical for me was the best day of the week. i loved them. the opportunity to put the classroom thinking to actual use was outstanding.

what i would do is consider what we were talking about in lecture and lab and then look for opportunities to put that to practical use at clinical. since you keep building upon your knowledge from lecture and lab you will continue to build upon skills while at clinical. make sense?

it can be a little overwhelming at the beginning because you probably won't be too sure of what to do. just remember, before you go to clinical, think about "what have i learned in class so far?" your instructors won't expect you to know any more than that.

For my clinicals, we get there at 8 am and have conference with our instructor. We are assigned a pt and discuss any special circumstances the pt might have. I work on a palliative care floor, so we start off with giving a complete bath, changing the bed, and doing vitals. Sometimes we do the pt's meds with the instructor. We also do finger sticks and insulin injections if the pt is a diabetic. It was all overwhelming the first few days, but I think I have it down and actually find it enjoyable.
