Your Favorite???

Not from NC, but I have vacationed there 4 times, and my parents go every year, sometimes 2x a year. They/I have always stayed in Carolina/Kure Beach or the outer banks. I love the state. Mountains, forests, beaches, all within a few hours drive of one another. Love Kure beach, more quiet, not as many people as the outer banks. My parents are actually looking to retire there. A few years ago, they were trying to convince me, saying I could attend nursing school in Wilmington. I can't wait to hear what others say, so I can make sure to visit on my next trip.

Any extra special restaurant, bed & breakfast, resort, beach, unusual places, etc., in our beautiful state, that you'd like to share with others in the forum? There are so many wonderful sights and sounds and places to visit in North Carolina.

My favorite place is Bald Head Island, off the coast of Brunswick County. You take a ferry to get there... and there are no cars, so one rents a golf cart or bike. There are wooded areas as well as pristine sandy beaches. Often hubby and I are the only people on the beach!

It is PRICEY. A day trip with meal (Ebb & Flows is my favorite place to eat) can run over $200, but if you are looking for serenity, this is the place! Of course you can rent houses, condos, and there are 2 B&B's as well. We've spent fall and spring weekends there when it isn't quite so expensive.

Wilmington is nearby, a nice community on the Cape Fear River, and Wrightsville and Carolina Beach areas. If I had a bajillion dollars I'd live there!

Oh yes !I like that area as well. :)

I'm a big fan of Topsail Island.. very residential (non commercial) and peaceful. It's just north of Wrightsville Beach. Great little restaurants there, and a "homey" atmosphere, yet lots of lovely homes to drool over, quaint little shops, etc. Not a while lot of "nightlife" or anything, no big "fancy" hotels, but jsut a nice getawy for a three day weekend if you don't like a lot of crowds, noise, and carrying on.

I've always wanted to visit Nags Head, though. Mayber next year.

If you're in to the mountains, and skiing, Boone is a great little college town and the whole surrounding area is breathtaking.

Of course there is the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is a whole excursion in and of itself. Lots and lots of gorgeous overlooks, stops along the way filled with history, great restaurants and Bed & Breakfasts, hiking trails and waterfalls...

NC really IS a beautiful state.. it has the best of both worlds.. the ocean with some really NICE beaches, and the lovely mountains with all its own beauty. :)

The there's Stone Mtn. which is awesome.. a huge round DOME of a rock for a mountaintop.. very unusual. And beautiful nat'l forest and state parks all around the area there.

And let's not forget Grandfather Mountain !!! AWESOME.

Your mention of the Blue Ridge Parkway brought some wonderful memories to mind! 15 years ago, hubby and I were transferred to Charlotte. We were childless,had a brand new red Miata convertible, and lots of time on our hands. We spent the summer weekends driving the Blue Ridge Parkway, and covered it from start to finish before the leaves fell from the trees. What a wonderful time we had!

Stayed out near Boone once in a town called Valle Crucis. Absolutely beautiful. Boone is beautiful as well lots to do and see. We stayed at a lovely B&B called The Mast Farm Inn.
