Youngstown information

Published

Hello everyone! DH and I are thinking of moving to Youngstown (his hometown). I am curious to hear about the reputations of various hospitals, and salary potential.

Currently I am a BSN prepared, ED RN (non trauma center) with 2 years of experience. Where we live an RN with that kind of experience makes around 24-27/hour, plus shift differential (3-8/hour). I almost cannot believe that RN's make that much money in Youngstown where the cost of living is substantially lower, even though I heard that Ohio RN's are unionized.... so is it true?

Thanks in advance for any information you may be able to give.

Hi Triage,

I'm in the metro.

The hosptials are well respected around here.

There are:

St. Elizabeth (St. E) *the "big one"

St. Elizabeth- Boardman campus (new hosptial)

Northside Medical Center

In Warren:

Trumbull Memorial Hosptial in Warren

St. Joseph (St. Joes)

Hillside Rehabilitation

Forum Health owns Northside, Trumbull Memorial, and Hillside. Humility of Mary Health owns St. E and St. Joes.

Outside of Mahoning and Trumbull Counties -- there are Sharon Regional (Sharon, PA), Jameson Memorial (New Castle, PA), Salem Community Hosptial (Salem, OH). The drives are not too far (within 25 miles).

I believe that nurses in the area are members of unions (I know Forum Health has one)

Not sure of average salary though. Sorry.

Specializes in trauma, neuro, cardiovascula.

ST. Elizabeth RN are not union, not sure what the base rate is but I do know your experience counts in the calculation of your starting rate.

I work at St. Elizabeth and have been there for 26 years.

We are a level I trauma center. Our ED has positions availabe.

Our per diem rate is $30.00/hr. shift diff is not much but incentives for picking up evening, night and weekend shifts are available.

Specializes in generalMedical surgical; MICU/SICU/CVICU.

In Youngstown, the Humility of Mary (St. Elizabeth's: youngstown and boardman) and Forum Health are the hospitals. Forum is unionized and St. E's is not unionized. I went to nursing school which utilized Forum Health for clinicals and I work at St. E's during school in various positions and started as a new grad there. Between the two, it seemed to me that the nurses at Forum were not happy compared to St. E's although some might beg to differ. I worked at St. E's as an RN on med-surg and ICU and have worked in 3 hospitals since then (in different states) and St. E's isnt all that bad. I would recommend them as a place for employment. When I left there, I think I was at like $23 or so with 2 years experience. After interviewing for different hospitals, my advice would be to ask to see the pay grid to make sure you get the most that you are worth and do not get low balled.
