I work in a Level 1 trauma center. One night in the midst of the "ER" chaos, I had a mother bring a perfectly healthy baby to the ER at 0230 because he's sick. She was very vague, but asked the triage medic, triage RN, registration, me, and the doctor all for a work excuse. On discharge I gave her that excuse with little Johnny's name on it as he was my patient. She was furious. "I was here and my boss will not accept this," she screamed. I politely explained our policy was to give excuses for the patient only. She left and called 911 from our lobby to report her rude nurse. The police came and arrested her. I have always wondered what became of her.

I also once had a patient whose complaint was "constipation." When I entered his room he was on all fours on the bed buck naked yelling "don't use no lube, just give it to me straight." Psych saw him quite quickly.

In nursing school we had clinical rotation in the local health department. A guy came in to have his genital warts burnt off and he consented to student observers. I went in on the procedure and he was all non-chalant the whole time, just talking like this was an everyday thing and whatever. It did lighten the mood and the tension a little. But after a brief lull in the conversation, as the NP is applying the caustic liquid to the warts on his genitals, the smell of burning flesh looming in the air, the man looks up at me and winks... "Hey," he says, "I'm going to my cabin in Tennessee this weekend... how bout you come along, cutie?"

.....

I just raised my eyebrows and politely told him I was engaged.

Wow.

I had a homeless man request a lighter from a co-worker. She gave it to him thinking he wasn't dumb enough to light up in the ED. WRONG!!! Not only did he light up, but it was his "self medication" he was smoking. The entire ED got a contact high.

I had another ER nurse come to the nurses station flustered. Her 90 yo man told her he had 2 more viagra left and was willing to use one for her.:yeah:
