Working while in the LVN program...

Nursing Students LPN/LVN Students

Published

Hi! I am wondering if anyone can share their experience with me on how they worked through LVN school. I will be attending a private college in California for a 13 month LVN program, and I know how it's sort of like "nursing bootcamp" and a full time job in itself! I will have to work at least part time, and I was wondering if anyone has had the same challenge to face, and what they did for work and how they worked around their school schedule :uhoh3:. Thanks :)

I'm not in school yet, but I'll be starting LPN school this fall. I'll be working 24 hours a week as a CNA. Luckily we get breaks and summers off, so I'll pick up more hours when I need to, since I'm a little nervous about paying my bills working only part-time. But school is going to become my #1 priority, so I guess you do what you have to.

I have talked to a lot of nurses who have worked during their LPN program, most of them full-time, and some with kids at home... and most of them say it depends on the individual. If you can prioritize and learn how to manage your time well, it can be done. My friend told me that there were some students who were young and still lived at home, didn't work, and ended up failing out of the program. But then there were single parents who worked full-time, who mangaged to not only pass, but with good grades.

Good luck with school! :) When do you start?

I will be starting in September. I am really excited! I have always worked as a CNA or medical assistant, and it just seems like the LVN/LPN program hours make it pretty impossible to do 7-7 shifts, or even 7-3 or 3-11 shifts?? I was thinking maybe I will have to go back to waitressing :/ Not my first choice...but I will do anything it takes! Thanks for your response!
