Question

Will vacation plans keep me from getting dream job?

Dear Nurse Beth,

I have been trying over the last two years to get a RN position at a nearby hospital. Recently I got a call from a nurse recruiter there. I am not sure if I will get my dream job or not, but problem is I have a planned vacation for 3 weeks which is out of country. If I am called for an interview should I mention this? And will it prevent me from getting this job?

Dear Job vs Vacation,

This isn't uncommon, and employers usually have no problem with it, if you are the right employee for the job.

Even so, if I had a chance at landing my dream job after trying for two years, I would consider re-scheduling my 3 week vacation if at all possible.

If that's not possible, then I would not volunteer the information until after you receive a job offer. If you don't have a job offer, it doesn't matter that you are going on vacation.

If you do have a job offer, then they like you, and hopefully they are already committed to you enough to say Ok.”

At point of accepting the job, I would inform them about your plans. Just be matter of fact, and avoid the term vacation”. Instead use family event”, or travel plans”.

I wish you the best of luck, meaning I hope you land the job and get your planned vacation.

Best wishes,

Nurse Beth

Thank you nurse Beth. I was debating over this for quite some time. Because I did not want to postpone the vacation since it also involved visiting a sick family member. So I think they will understand that.
