I recieved WIA for 3 semesters while in Rn school. I quit my job to be in school, So i had to fill out a paper proving to them that the program was too intensive to hold a job. WIA paid my gas for every time I went to class (it was a set amount determined by how far I lived from school). I had to get a teacher/instructor or nurse to sign my form every time I went to something school related. It also paid for my NCLEX review and any books that PELL, HOPE grant, etc. did not cover. I turned my form in every friday and recieved a check in the mail a few days later, with the amount according to how many times I had been to school that week.
This was in Georgia and things may have been set up differently or they may have changed since then. Anyways, I hope this helps :)
I live in TN and as long as I was accepted into a "demand" program then I was elgible. It paid for my tuition and a certain amount per day for gas. I didn't have to show proof of income or anything. Now that I have graduated, that keep tabs every 6 months or so to see if we and where we are working. Other than that, its a very easy painless process.
WIA payed for my LPN training. It didn't have anything to do with whether you are working or not, as I was working at the time and have never received unemployment, but it may vary in each state. I had Pell and WIA paid the difference and I did not get a refund, but that will probably depend on the cost of your school. Here WIA has a limit on how much you will receive... Now with you already being an LPN they may not pay since you already have some form of job training, which is the purpose of the program. Another option I reccomend you check out is HRSA's Nursing Scholarship Program. They pay tuition, you get a reasonable costs stipend, and a monthly stipend. They have not put up the application for this year and it is highly competitive, but it is possible as I am a recipient!! Good Luck!!

Hi all! I live in Alabama and was thinking about applying for the WIA grant. Does anyone know exactly how this process works? I'm receiving PELL so will they pay the rest and give you a check for whats left? Im about to enter my second semester of the LPN-RN bridge program and will be leaving my job this month since I will be in school 4 days a week. My job put a freeze on the scholarships and denied me leave without pay which I wanted just so I could keep my insurance since Im having a baby in July! If anyone has received this grant please give me more info. THANKS:)
