Where do you work?

I am hoping to find a rewarding nurse practitioner position which allows me to be a mom too. I would like to find somewhere that has weekends and holidays off and daytime hours. What are my specialty options? I am applying to start in January 2015 and there are a number of specialties I can choose. The director said for me to reflect on what I want my career to be. My thought is, I'm a nurse, I would be happy doing almost any kind if practitioning. But, what I really crave is to specialize in something that allows me to enjoy my husband and children as well (be involved in their school life). Where should I go?Family? Adult/geriatric? Acute care? What type of jobs for nps exist that fit what I'm looking for? I've been an ICU nurse for 3 1/2 years and ED for the last year. Thanks!

I'm not a np yet, but it seems like there are lots of opportunities for you. Just do a job search, and you will see jobs offered in different specialties....sometimes they say, "no on-call, nights, or weekend"....or something like this. There are lots of practices out there that have normal work schedules. You just have to see when the time comes what might be a good fit for you.

It sounds like a major player in your decision is work schedule. I can say that most FNPs work clinics which is 8a -5p and ACNPs work 12 hour shifts in hospitals, but they can vary a bit.
