Where are all the ULCA nurses at???

Oh, me too. I accepted a position at their transplant/surgical ICU for the August new grad program, I graduate in June.

I currently work there, and I have heard no negatives from the new grads and the seasoned nurses. The only negative the new grads gave me, was that some of them did not feel they had a long enough orientation. For instance, orientation at Childrens hospiatl is close to 4-6 months (does not sound credible, but that's what I was told), but at Mattel UCLA it is only 8 weeks for an acute care pediatric RN position.

8 weeks? EEEk! I thought all the UCLA new grads got a year orientation. That is why I was so interested in working there, until I thought about the long commute from OC. Congratulations to you both! I was going to apply for the the SICU as well =).

Its a year mentorship, but actual time you spend one on one with a preceptor is 8weeks for the floor and 3 months for the ICU. No hospital would ever allow a one-on-one preceptorship to last 1 year. It does not make sense financially. Plus, I doubt any new grad would want to be a student for a year again...

I accepted a New Grad position At UCLA SM starting in Aug. too. I volunteered there as a Care Extender for a year and found that many RNs liked working there but many felt that the management's treatment of them left much to be desired. I had two clinical rotations at Cedars Sinai and could not find a nurse who didn't really like working there. I came to really like being at Cedars too. I joined UCLA because I'm continuing my education here and it's walking distance from home; but otherwise I would have gone to Cedars in a heartbeat. Some of my colleagues who did clinical rotations at UCLA did love it very much. They felt that there was an atmosphere of collegial respect and less of the 'yes herr doctor' attitude that they saw at St. John's for example.

COngratulations to you; I have met a couple of nurses who were New Grads at UCLA but went on to other places before I managed to ask them - How are the wages? Will someone commuting from OC, for example, survive the gas expenses? Thanks for any tips and suggestions.

Congrats to you too. what area will you be in? im sure you'll be okay. from from oc is pretty far but you can do it! i dont really kknow any nurses there either but when i went there they seemed pretty happy and friendly.
