What's your work-week like?

Are there any CNMs out there who'd be willing to share what their work schedule is like? If you would, please include the hours per week you work and where you put those hours in. How much call do you take? I would really love to get a feel for how it really is "in the field". Thanks so much.

I'm not a CNM yet (in school) but, I do work with 2 of them. They are in practice with 2 OB/GYNs and they do 3 days per week in the office (9am-5pm) and are on call pretty much all the time for their own patients. So, they may have no one in labor for a week and only do the office days, or they may have several deliver in just a few days and literally never get home for a couple of days at a time. It really varies.

Since there are 2 of them, they are able to cover for eachother if one has to go out of town for a few hours or days. They could trade call so that they aren't on call all the time, but they choose to care for all of their own patients from start to finish, so they don't trade in general.

Hope that helps!

I'm not a CNM, but I just talked to one of our local ones, and she is in a practice with 2 OB's and 6 CNM's and each of the CNM's see every patient - and they each work 2 days in the office/clinic and have one 24 hour shift on call at the hospital catching babies. They will even leave you mid-labor if their call shift is about up and another MW in the practice will take over. They do not have their "own" patients, and sell all patients in the practice.
