What do you do for morale?

Published

I just got out of the military and I was the representative for my shop in the booster club. The booster club was a volunteer club to help arrange things to boost the morale of the people in the squadron. We would arrange cook outs, bake sales, lotteries, and many other things. (Yes my squadron had a 24 hour operation.) I was just wondering if any of the hospitals you work at do similar things. I have read time and time again on this site about burnout. How does your unit get people to work as a team and try to prevent burnout?

Every year the ED Physicians (I work ED) throw a staff winter party. It's nice to hang out with everybody outside of work. Also, we all bring in stuff to celebrate special occasions - a cake for birthdays, or throw wedding/baby showers. I work night shift, and usually at least once a month, we'll all go to breakfast together after the shift, just to unwind - usually after a really tough night, and we let off steam with a little silliness! The nightshift crew is really tight knit, and we all work really well together. THe key to preventing burnout is to know how to get a little silly and to laugh at the humorous things that happen within a long night shift!
