What are my chances?

U.S.A. Colorado

Hello!

I've been looking at ABSN and Traditional BSN programs lately. I was wondering if I could obtain some advice from the brightest minds out there about getting into any program.

I will be graduating with a BA in Ethnic Studies and a minor in Diversity with a 3.7 GPA. However, my Nursing Pre-req GPA is currently around a 3.1, which I will either raise or drop depending on these last few quarters. Overall, my cum GPA is 3.3.

Although my GPA is not as competitive as many others, I do have a decent handful of Volunteer/Paid hospital hours as well as leadership positions.

I was wondering what my chances are in getting into:

1. ABSN program

2. Traditional program

Any recommended programs that I have a higher chance in getting into?

I appreciate any help/recommendations!:)

How many prerequisites do you have left to do? Each course is an opportunity to raise your prereq GPA a bit. At UNC, for example, prereqs are given extra weight in the GPA calculations. Your 3.7 GPA would be fine for them; a prereq of 3.1, however, might present a problem.

Fortunately there's an easy way to find out: go talk to them directly, and to every other school you're interested in. Those of us with previous degrees, and especially with previous graduate degrees, know the value of investing a bit of research on the front end. NO amount of information here on AllNurses will make up for direct information from the schools you want.

Most schools prefer to do this kind of information exchange at the regular advising sessions they set up. I went to 4: 3 local universities and one local community college. The advisors did an overall presentation that answered all my application questions and could then tell me in less than 5 minutes time whether I was competitive for their programs.

Good luck! I hope you find the right school for your goals.

Dina
