West Central Technical College Fall 2009 Students

Published

This is a thread for students who were accepted into the Fall 2009 program. I started this, so that we could count down till school starts and help each other with places where we can get cheaper school supplies etc.

Hello Blessed,

Good idea!! Are you nervous and excited as I am? I have already gotten my books off Amazon (not so cheap), and I am about to order uniforms. I waited until I thought the new patch was approved. Can't wait to meet you and all our other classmates.

I am also excited and nervous. I bought all my books from Amazon as well. I got my uniforms a month ago. I still have to get shoes and a bag. I can't decide if I should purchase a rolling bag or just a regular backpack. Any suggestions on places where I can purchase some good shoes?

I have just been accepted to the LPN program at West Central in Waco. JC Penny outlet in Forest Park has scrubs really cheap. I don't know what colors or styles to buy. does anyone? When will be have to start wearing

uniforms, and what classes will we take first?

Please Help

Thanks,

Congratulations on your aceptance to the LPN program! I was accepted to the RN program and we had to purchase uniforms which the school selected through Meridys. The uniforms have a school patch. If you were just accepted, they will probably send you information about the uniforms, books, etc. I believe the uniforms should only be worn during clinicals. I am not sure about the classes, try contacting the director for the LPN program.

Does the JC Penney in Forest Park carry nursing shoes?

Good Luck.

Hey Everyone!

I, too, am excited about starting the RN program on Sept 30th. I have purchased my books (Amazon), the shoes I got were just "New Balance" tennis shoes (for walking), I think I pd about $45.00 at the Shoe Dept. in the mall, and I am waiting on my uniforms to arrive. OH, I still have to get my 2nd TB test done (next week) and my Adacel vaccine. I can't wait to register on Aug 10th! I hope that we will find out more that week on when the junior/senior luncheon is. I found a rolling type bag at Kohls on sale for $50-$60, but I am going to check around. I am pretty sure that I will get one that rolls! Does anyone have a PDA? I heard from a couple of other nursing students that they can be used during clinicals, I just don't know how much better it would be with one vs. using our books. I am still taking classes, are any of you all? I have Humanities and Speech this quarter, and Humanities is VERY demanding right now! I am so ready to get these classes over with and start nursing! Talk to you guys more later on!

Hello MyDream 2011,

I think I might get the new balance walking shoes, the price is more reasonable compared to the nursing shoes. I just completed all my immunizations and titers today...phew! I have been looking at rolling bags in walmart, and I saw a Jeep bag for $39-$49. I was hoping I could find a good backpack with thick straps.

I do not have a PDA, I don't know if I should get one. I am not taking any classes....just trying to relax before school.

Regarding the shoes, since we are only going to be on our feet like that two days a week I figured I would start out with less expensive shoes first, and if I see they hurt my feet I will try something else. I think they will be fine though. There are two or three nurses in my Speech class that will be going into their second year. As soon as I get the chance I am going to talk to them and see if they can tell me a little more about what we can expect. I am thrilled and counting down the days!!!!!:)

CONGRATS to all of you!!! I hope to be where you are sometime in the next few months. I am currently Active Duty Air Force and I will be separating and attending WTC in Jan 2010. I have a few questions for all of you. I hope you don't mind sharing. First, why WTC??? How rigorous is the program? LPN vs RN? Right now because I want to get into the field and work as quickly as possible I think I am going to pursue the LPN route. Do any of you have any suggestions for me? How competitive did you feel the process was? What is the LPN job market like in the area? Any other knowledge you can offer would be very much appreciated. I have made several posts and asked questions and havent gotten any responses. RN or LPN please feel free to give me all your feedback. Thanks and have a great day

Thanks

Hi RNmydreams,

I am going into the RN program at WGTC (formerly WCTC before the merger) this fall. I can't tell you what the program is like yet since I am just starting and I really have not had the chance to talk to any of the current RN students. I will definitely know soon though. September 30th will be our first day. I personally chose WCTC because it is close to my home, it is easy to choose a class schedule that works for me, and they have a high graduate rate and pass rate on the NCLEX. Also, I can get my degree sooner since I am going for an Associates degree vs. a BS. I feel like you, I have a passion to be in healthcare and want to get out there as soon as I can. I can always go back and work on a higher degree in the future. WGTC. As far as whether to choose LPN or RN, I really don't know what to say about that. From what I am told, RN pay is higher than LPN, but with a higher degree of responsibility as well. Check with me a few months from now and I will have more to tell, and maybe an LPN will comment too. The programs at WGTC are very competitive...you will work your rear end off but it is such a wonderful feeling of accomplishment in the end! I am looking forward to a very rewarding career in Nursing! Good Luck!

THANKS for your input!!! I really appreciate it!!! WHen you start please keep me updated!!! Because I am not completely sold on the idea of LPN!!! At least not yet...I am just taking my time, weighing my pros and cons, and praying!!!!! Much success to your future!!! THANKS AGAIN!!!

I am in the LPN program in Newnan that started in July. We had to buy the uniforms from Meridy's. They are all white and very hot and uncomfortable. I would be careful about anything you buy to wear for clinicals because we had to have everything approved by our instructor and we have to be checked every morning before we are allowed to go in the building (right now, we're in the nursing home). They check everything (socks, shoes, underwear, etc).

Many of the students in our class have purchased the rolling crates with lids that they sell at the office stores for about $25. You need to have a lot of binders and paper and room for books supplies etc. You will also have to purchase a code something called MedsPub which is an online program to practice for your boards. It is $100 per quarter. The nursing bag that they made us purchase has many of the supplies you need for lab and to take to clinicals (stethescope, penlight, scissors, etc...the stethescope is very cheap so it may be hard to use).

For those considering applying to the LPN program, it is pretty bad the first quarter. Very overwhelming. You are given a very large amount of work and you are only on a 4-day a week schedule. The days are also a little bit long. We are in class from 8:30-4:30 and clinicals are from 6:30-4:30. We started out with 20 and are down to 15.

As far as RN vs. LPN, I wish I had gone the RN route. More money. But I am planning on finishing my BSN after I'm done with this.

Good Luck! :nurse:
