Well, less work for me!

State of TX has determined that I, as an LVN, was not taught basic assessment skills in nursing school (mainly breath sounds, hello??) Therefore, I can no longer put in a pre- or post- assessment on my patients. I can now only put in "data collection" and the RN has to come behind me and assess. Less work for me, but more for the RNS. Makes me feel kind of lame. Now I am definitely just a "med nurse" when I don't have a bay. Usually, as the 2nd nurse on the floor, I do assessments, put on the CVCs, pass meds.

What's next, TX? No more CVC initiation/DC?

I know what you are talking about my clinic started this. feel as though I have been demoted. With out using these skills what is the point (even though we lose alotof skills we were taught anyway) LVNs are basically just glorified PCT's at this point. Thinking of finding a new line of work.

Oh yea, I am almost done with my RN through Excelsior so hopefully that will bring me some freshness in dialysis. Otherwise, I am tired of it and ready for a new path. I have a bay every day, what about you?

You are NOT lame. You are ANYTHING but lame... I'm a RN and I work with 2 LPNs who kick "you know what" and let me tell you what I've learned from this whole situation: You can take away a nurse's stethoscope and you can tell her she's not allowed to chart lung sounds- but you CANNOT take away her ability to assess her patients- but heeeey! you can call her assessments "data collection" if it helps you sleep at night. Do you get what I'm saying?!? Don't let this sillyness discourage you and if you had any doubts what-so-ever PLEASE let me clear them up for you: You are valued without a stethoscope. You are appreciated without a stethoscope. You make a difference without a stethoscope.
