Want to move on!

Hello -- I am an RN in Philadelphia. Ive been doing bedside nursing for one year. I hate the schedule (weekends/holidays/some nights). I hate the actual job most days. I am looking to do something weekdays 9-5. I have had no luck finding a new job - they all seem to be bedside nursing 3-11 or nights. Where are all these in demand jobs? I thought there was so much opportunity in nursing. I am not finding any variety or any reason to stay in this career. I highly respect these RNs who do bedside care for 10 - 20 + years. That's amazing. YOU'RE amazing!! But I personally cannot do it anymore. I don't want to. Any suggestions on where I can find a 9-5 using my RN degree? I know they exist, I cannot find them. The outpt. surgery centers want 3-5 experience. Philly is pretty competitive with RN jobs. Please help!!

You could always inquire about open positions at clinics, doctors offices, or at a school (elementary-college). The grade schools might be your best option as you get weekends off and don't have to work holidays. In addition, you do get 2 months off in the summertime.

Depending on how many years of experience you have under your belt, you could consider case management, work for insurance companies, school nursing, or even consider home health to set your own hours, etc. Good luck.

Does your hospital have an outpatient clinic? It might be easier to get a job if you're transferring within the same system. Clinics and doctor's offices are good choices. Also check out dialysis. What degree do you have? With a BSN you can probably teach clinicals to ADN or LPN students. Look at the other hospitals in your area too, mine usually has a few postings that specify M-F, and with a year of experience you should at the very least be able to find a day job somewhere, in some type of nursing (although that doesn't help with weekends/holidays). You can also consider moving up the ladder in the hospital and angling for a mangement position eventually.
