Volunteering

Published

Hey all! I have a couple questions and I also need a little advice.

I am looking to volunteer in order to qualify as a better candidate for the nursing programs in my area(near Los Angeles). I have a couple questions before I start making phone calls to different hospitals:

1. Do I need to have a specific department in mind for which I would like to volunteer?

2. I am looking to get a part time job & volunteer while I wait to hear back about my application. That being said, should I keep my schedule open and look for a part time position after I find out what hours the hospital will need me?

Thanks in advance! Hope everyone had a great holiday.

Usually, yes you got to have a departement in mind when you apply. I volunteer at St Joseph Hospital at Orange and when I applied, I wanted to be in the telemetry unit. Unfortunately, the department had a waitlist so I decided to be a messenger (runs errands, deliver blood, tools, meds, discharge patients, send patient records).

They usually have you in a fixed shift. Mine's at Friday 8-12 am. It's really not strict though. Sometimes people volunteer for an hour and let the supervisor know that they have to go or they have school on that day. They are lenient to students especially college ones, but dont take advantage of it. Always let them know if you are unexpectedly unable to volunteer at a certain day.

Thank you so much for the speedy reply! I really appreciate the info. :)
