Video Interview

Hello everyone! I received an email about doing a video interview for a job in pediatrics. I've never done a video interview before, and I wondered if anyone knew what it would consist of or could offer any tips. Thanks!

It can depend. It can either be a live video interview on a program like Skype or, apparently, it can be site where you record your answers to pre-selected questions. Generally, you only get one or two tries per answer with those.

Either way, I'd ensure you know how to work whatever program or site they use. If you are using something like Skype, make sure it is downloaded before and that it works correctly with a test video call. Make sure your profile and username is professional. I'd also find a good area to put your computer if you can change the set up, keeping an eye out for lighting (so it's easy to see you) and what's going to be in the background. You don't want your laundry behind you or a mess.

Get comfortable with the camera's range so that you aren't using hand motions, etc that are out of the the camera's view (unless you don't want them to be seen, of course). It might also be good to see where you need to look (camera or computer screen) so that it seems like you are looking the interviewers in the eye/looking straight forward. I know sometimes people stare at the screen or the camera and appear to be looking up and away from the person on the other end. So, mostly, all this boils down to play around with your camera before your interview to get comfortable with it.

Pro tip: you can do the interview in your undies, or even buck naked, as long as you have a professional-looking top on. It's awesome.
