Using a MCAT book to study for the TEAS?

Published

Hi all,

Today I bought a MCAT biological science review book to study for the TEAS science portion. It was from a local used book store. For those who took the TEAS, do you think it is wise? Should I get a different book to study for the TEAS? I also have the McGraw Hill review. I'm debating whether I should get the Kaplan as well.

I took the TEAS this September and used the McGraw Hill book. I found it very useful. I scored in the 94 percentile. I don't think the MCAT is necessary. My boyfriend is studying for the MCATS and the science in his books is more in-depth. The TEAS is very basic. The practice tests in the McGraw book is very similar to the real test. I also looked up a couple free tests online.

It's ultimately up to you whether you want to keep your MCAT book. Maybe you can use it to supplement the material you need more review on.

Good luck studying! :)

hey electricL, did you study with the McGraw and the ATI manuals or only the McGraw book?

I talked to a girl that got 96% in the TEAS and she told me the ATI manual was more than enough but I've read here posts of people complaining that it doesn't cover everything it's needed. What do you think?

oh my mistake, i did not use the McGraw Hill. i just purchased the ATI study manuals from the ATI testing website. my apologies, i assumed the McGraw Hill was from ATI. i have read similar complaints about the ATI book, but i did find the ATI sufficient. i guess it just depends on how confident you are in your subjects. if you feel that you need more review, it does not hurt to have more books to study from. if your test is not anytime soon, it doesn't hurt to study from more books.

also, the types of questions they ask on the actual test vary. i have read some people had a lot of geology questions. but on my actual test, i didn't have any.

I checked Amazon's reviews and people say that Geology stuff was part of the older editions of the TEAS.

At this point I'll just study with the ATI material I purchased and that's it. I'm taking the test in less than 3 weeks, and I'm taking 5 classes so I don't have a lot of extra time :)

Thanks for answering so fast!

Going back to the original question, I've seen material for both the TEAS and the MCAT and I really think an MCAT manual would cover more than is needed, so unless the OP is an overachiever, I wouldn't recommend it.

Good luck! :)

I used only the ATI guide, studied for two weeks and passed with a 70. The ATI book was enough, and was a very good represenative of what to expect on the test. Take the practice tests in the book, and focus on areas you score lower in. As long as you have a basic understanding of the concepts in the ATI book, you will do well. If you are struggling with some topics, I would suggest then going to another source where the info is presented in a different way, that might make sense for you. Khan Academy videos on youtube were also helpful on some of the science topics.
