Was this on the initial immunoassays test? Many common over the counter or prescription drugs can trigger a false positive result.

If it was the immunoassays test that was positive they should send it out for confirmation testing called gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. This will show directly if you have meth or an opioid use and which opioid in particular.

If you are truly drug free and the confirmation test come back positive get an attorney. Get hair tested immediately and see if there were problems with the chain of custody of your sample. it will be an expensive and long fight.

Be honest with yourself. If you have used drugs go ahead and self report to the board and start the recovery process.

Do you take an Rx medications? Or over the counter medications? I believe ibuprofen can trigger a false positive for opioids. And obviously Rx narcotics will test positive. ADHD medications are amphetamines (most not all). An initial test will only show positive or negative but will not say for what drug or how much. A second test is done to show what drug is in your system and how much. I take Adderall for ADHD and fatigue, I've had urine screens done through work and always test positive for amphetamine. I've had to have the second testing done and then verify my Rx and prescribing MD with the testing clinic in the past...

If you truly believe a mistake has been made than demand a new screen be done on a new sample. Opioids and amphetamines are illegal without a valid Rx so you don't want a false positive to become drug charges...

If you are on any medication, rx or otc. Let them know, because certain meds can give you a false positive, as the other postings stated. At one of my former jobs the same thing happened to a pt. Her rx meds made her come out positive for opiods, the doctor asked me to write a note, staying the med, medical dx and she signed and stamped it. Problem was solved. All the best!
