Hello all:
I am a senior graduate nursing student trying to line up jobs for either this upcoming summer or fall. I had an internship as a student nurse last summer at UPMC Presby, and was not very satisfied with the personal information the nurses gave me. I have also heard about the bad rumors of management and how poorly they treat the nurses.
Is this just a trait with UPMC Presby and Monetifiore though (the "big guns" of UPMC)? Because I'm in love with the neuroscicences, both med/surg and ICU, and Mercy has a couple of openings right now. I have applied, hoping that they call requesting for an interview. But am I setting myself a trap here, or is UPMC Mercy different from Presby and Montefiore? Is anyone currently working (or worked in the past) for UPMC Mercy? Were you satisfied with management, as well as your co-workers? Did you feel that you were treated fair and earned good benefits? Thank you for responding; this information is valuable to me.
Erika :-)

I'm speaking second hand, but my husband is a nurse at Mercy. Like any place, it has its ups and downs...
Pros: Decent pay, PTO incentives (he gets PTO for donating blood regularly), lots of experience. He's on the policy council, and has opportunities to learn a lot of new skills. He's had a really good experience with them working around his school schedule, too. Cons: Busy work load (on nights, he regularly has 9 patients), and you can't transfer to another position or floor without your manager's approval - impossible to get if you're a good nurse or the unit is shortstaffed.
Presby and Montefiore aren't that bad, in my opinion (I did clinicals there a few years ago) - I love the high from so many interesting cases, and I like the teaching hospital atmosphere..! Don't let other nurses give you a bad impression - most people don't like their place of employment (what with the grass being greener).
Good luck!
