Update to: Should I switch to days even though it is harder as a new nurse or stay at nights where it’s short staffed? Part 2

Nurses General Nursing

Hey, Guys! I had made a post asking if I should switch to days or stay on nights a couple of months ago and updated that I was doing well. I wanted to update one more time.

I am much MUCH happier on days. My life is actually enjoyable. I don’t sleep all day on my days off. Work is more enjoyable during days as well. I have a greater support system and my days coworkers help me more than the nights coworkers did.

The only issue I have is that one of my charge nurses doesn’t like me (apparently she hates new nurses and gives them a hard time to “break them in”). She’ll switch the assignment around in the middle of the day so that I end up getting the harder patients and doesn’t help me at all if I am drowning. But it’s an easy fix because they all work a fixed schedule so I just work when she’s not working ?.

moral of the story: make your moves quietly and don’t let others influence your next steps. You’ll find there’s always going to be people who discourage you no matter what.

Thank you for your input ?

Very wise advice! IMO doing a lot of things at work quietly/without needing to share problems, thoughts and plans with everyone is the way to do things. The less they know, the less there is for them to pick at and opine about.

Glad it is working out for you.

Thank you! I am thinking about moving to ICU then PICU once my contract is up and I made the mistake of asking those coworkers what they thought about ICU and Peds. They all told me I should never because both of those are “too much work” yet they complain that where we work is too much work too ?

One person or another is going to have something to say about whatever it is. Worse if they decide to gossip about it, too--which happens often enough. I would much rather investigate things and make my observations on the down-low and then make my decisions on my own. Too many people around who are just not supportive and not professional, and I don't need their input on anything and certainly don't need them having any opportunity to weigh in on my business or even sabotage others.
