UIC Graduate Entry Program

Hi folks,

Thinking about applying to UIC's GEP program. Anybody here applied and was accepted? What were your stats?

My stats: 3.2 Overall GPA/3.5 Sci BA in Sociology. Office Manager in home health care, tech in a medical equipment co, medical assistant (no cert) in dr's office and later office manager there. Volunteering in Nursing Home around 120 hours...

From what I can tell on their website, after completing the NCLEX, you immediately start the master portion of the program. Is this correct?

I completely agree that any general change will be at the very minimum 5 years out. However, it's possible that some states and hospital systems may start making the move to push for DNPs much sooner. Look at the havoc magnet status hospitals in the Chicagoland area are creating for GEP by not employing nurses without a BSN and the IOM isn't pushing for 80% BSN until 2020.

I'm not sure if these things should factor into every applicant's decision and most likely I am borrowing trouble by worrying about it this soon. Still, it's something that I will consider before making my final decision!

Hey all! So I know this may be a silly question, but for those that already interviewed, did you print out your ticket for the interview and bring it along? I just got 2 more emails with interview dates even though I've already signed up for the 16th. I'm getting a little worried that my spot was deleted or something, so I wanted to bring the ticket to prove I am supposed to be there...paranoia perhaps lol

As for the conversations about places hiring you after graduation, I am in the Psych boat and I've actually found several postings on indeed offering jobs to new grads with a PMHNP so I don't think we have to worry too much about it. We really won't be using much of the "nursing" aspect of our education, rather the MS degree in the specialty. When I spoke to the person conducting our interviews :) she told me that there are more spots to fill than students. Hope that put some Psych hearts at ease.

Hey I received that as well. I am going to bring a ticket. I don't think our spots have been given up or deleted because I am thinking it's a mass email. I am for the 22nd April (it's full) and I still got that email so don't worry about it.

As for the PMH jobs, I did a jobs.com and monster search in Chicago area and there are plenty of job offerings for us! So I was never too worried about finding a job for us mental clinicians. They do however require 1 or 2 (depending on the hospital)years of experience as a job requirement. I will fit that in somewhere after my 15 months.

Hey Kwolikowa, I'm doing psych too and was confused about that. I emailed the school, and they said it was just a mass email and not to worry about it.

Also how did she go about saying there were more spots to fill than students? Did she say not many people were applying for it or something? I guess that is good news!

I am doing the same, rainkissedleaves! April 22 1-4 for psych.

I meant after graduation. So there are more spots to fill for jobs than the number of graduates each year. Sorry should have specified that :)
