Thank you for the reply ccrn 2011........good assignments? decent housing? were you pleased with those areas of town or would you have preferred to live elsewhere?-if so where? Sorry for the grilling-just curious as I am trying to get there for June and am debating taking the company housing or finding a place myself. Have visited SF a few times and have a general familiarity for the area, but am not sure where the best place to actually live would be if I find my own place (safe, close to transpo, restaurants, shopping, etc). What is your rate with AMN? I am with them now in Boston and did an assignment a few years ago with them at Stanford-certainly not the highest paying company, but they did get me the assignments I wanted........
"Good assignment"...I think that is a matter of preference. I am a peds RN and worked the acute care float first tour and worked 6L (peds med surg) second tour. I much preferred the float team due to the variety, flexible manager, etc. Rate...thinking 20 something, but then I did not turn to travel nursing for the $$$, I was in it for the travel and flexibility. I worked for AMN 6 years and stayed because of my recruiter. She tolerated my demands in regards to housing (upgraded furniture, appliances) and bonuses (not sure if that exists anymore), early/late move ins, and time off. I think all companies are comparable otherwise.
My housing at Avalon Sunset was wonderful. I was able to walk to work, reserved parking provided, walkable distance to public transport . The units themselves were dated and lacked modern amenities ie. microwave, pool, AC. My housing at St Francis was a struggle since the property is a empty tin can toss from the highway and I worked nights. Very noisy and I had to take the train to work. I did take the housing allowance on my last assignment since I was staying with a friend, I thought it was a generous amount. I was also reimbursed for garage parking at the hospital.
If your UCSF assignment is adult care, you could be at either the Parnassus campus or the Mt. Zion campus. I am not familiar with the housing near Mt. Zion. However there are shuttle buses running between the two facilities all day.
I have seen something AMN has been promoting that would make hourly pay rates higher??? Not sure what it was since I am now a retired traveler. Happily settled down and do not miss the hustle and bustle of moving every 13 weks or so. But it was good for six years : )
Hope this helps, best wishes to you and safe travels.
Thank you very much ccrn 2011. I too am on my last legs with travelling-have done it about the same amount of time as you and am looking to "retire" as well, but I always wanted to "do" San Francisco, so I figured I would go out with it being my last hurrah........I appreciate your responses. best of luck to you too!!
