Okay my fellow nurses! Here we go!. I am a RN on a High Risk Cardio unit. I am ready to move on and progress in my career however i am torn on what to do. I really like the fast paced environment that I work in and want to continue into a career that provides me that. I have shadowed in mutiple ICU's such as CCU, CTICU, and SICU (surgical, trama, burn). I really liked them all however I can't figure out which one to go to. I feel that part of it is becaue I don't know if I want to work as a CRNA, Flight Nurse, or as a NP in the ICU's. All of those pathways appeal to me. I really hated going to nursing school in the theroy portion of class however clinicals I loved and usually did very well in. I am not gonna lie I wasnt to keen on L&D. I am a guy and waiting around for someone to have a baby was mental murder to me. (I mean no offense to all you L&D nurses out there. Its just not for me; however I do respect you all for doing that.)
I love nursing however it was not my first career, the military was but I got injured and now I am here but I love it.
Please help, give me your stories, suggestions, or whatever you can throw at me.
Thanks a million,
Anna Flaxis, BSN, RN

Take what I have to say with a complete grain of salt. I am just an ER nurse who is happy with my station in life and has no plans to further my education or to make any upward career moves- although sometimes I do fantasize about being a flight nurse and riding on the chopper, but that's probably just a pipe dream. I have found a wonderful ER to work in and I'd be an idiot to give this job up!
So, here goes. I would think if CRNA is your goal, then a SICU makes sense to me. If flight, then either trauma or medical ICU. If NP, then MICU. Again, take my my advice with a grain of salt. I really don't know what I'm talking about!
