Hi Nurse Beth,
I feel torn. I’m currently employed as a stroke coordinator, MSN at a joint commission primary stroke center. I have applied for and have an offer for a staff nurse position in the float pool, overnights, no holiday or weekend commitment. It would be a cut in pay, about $6 per hour. My life has shifted because of COVID. I was furloughed because of my speciality for the month of April, and now I have to virtual school my children 3 days a week.
On top of this my mother just passed away after a short illness. I am considering going back to staff nursing for family reasons, and just because the leadership responsibilities are overwhelming at this time. My management team had said they would let me pretty much work whenever I want at the hospital, but the same responsibilities. I just want to simplify my life right now and be there for my family. What would you do? Thank you
Dear Torn,
I'm sorry for the loss of your mother. You've had several stressful life events in a very short time, and lessening your responsibilities at work sounds like a healthy choice. A necessary choice.
Your management team is supportive which means they value you. With your experience, you will be able to change jobs again later should you need a challenge.
What would I do? Go back to staff for now, enjoy the weekends off without worrying about presentations or data, or surveys, find a way to make the $6.00 cut work, and enjoy the reduced taxes.
Best wishes,
Nurse Beth
