Tips for a new triager

I just got my first telephone triage job! We have books to aid in my triaging, but otherwise it's almost brand new to me. Is there anything I should know about being a telephone triager? At this facility, MAs have been doing it, and I will be the first nurse this facility has ever had.

It can be a very mentally stressful job. I have been doing it for 7 years. I take around 30 calls in 8 hours. You will learn how to multitask. Listening, documenting the call and arriving at a safe outcome for the caller. You will need to learn how to take control of the call. Sometimes people talk a lot. Are you receiving mutliple calls? Our protocols are all on the computer. I would imagine looking at a book would be difficult. How is it going so far?

Thank you for your response! I can imagine a lot of these techniques take time to grow. I haven't started yet, sadly. I should be in the next week or two!
