Time it takes???????

I was wondering what is the average time it takes to insert a PICC line?

Depends on age of aptient, the veins that you have to deal with, and how fast that radiology gets there to verify placement, if not done in Special Procedures.

Yes,

I agree with Suzanne, the variables will make a big difference. However, It usually takes me 1-1.5 hours to check the chart, review procedure with pt, have consent signed, and place the line. Sometimes it seems that the mobile xray of the line, with results, can take 1/2 the day. (That is if your placing lines in the LTC setting, like me)

Hello,

There are very many variables. At our hospital, we also use the ultrasound machine to guide us with a cross section of the veins. This can certainly hasten things at least as far as finding an appropriate vein. But even if all the legistics are taken care of as well as the x-ray and all, sometimes just clearing the room or immediate area is a huge task.

In my experience a PICC insertion can take any where from 40" to 2'. I would really like to develop a plan to make things run smoother. Any suggesstions? Quote" Do not compare yourselves to others, only to your own potential"
