a patient is admitted to the hospital within 1 hour she goes into a thyroid crisis, what do you do first.

Are you referring to thyroid storm? If so, O2, fluids with electrolytes, antipyretics if indicated, inderal to control heart rate and BP, iodide to block thyroid hormone release, propylthiouracil to block thyroid hormone production, and definitely transfer ICU

Can't do your homework for ya... sorry. But will give you a hint. In school, transfering somewhere else would be considered "passing the buck" so, it's what would you do if you had the MD order to do eg drugs, labs, tx..... see?

Assuming that is a homework question ...

I would suggest including:

1. What assessments would you be making and what findings would you expect to in a thyroid crisis?

2. What are the first things you would do in response to those expected findings? (assuming that your desired transfer to the ICU won't happen immediately in response to your just wishing for it :) )

3. What physician's orders would you expect to receive and be prepared for?
