The Worst

Just when I thought I had experienced most everything..... I had a pt have a miserable time before death because of a dosage error in a infusion pump. Instinct told me the dose was wrong and indeed that proved to be the case. Pt was very underdosed. I just hate pain and worked so hard to try to ensure pt was comfortable and calm. Trust your gut. Not every label tells the truth. Thanks to a knowledgable hospice doc and to lots of hospice team support, we were able to get pt out of crisis and comfortable enough to die. O but I was one upset mama bear after!

OK, need more info on this- none of us can afford to have this happen- none of us could stand it. Please tell us about it.

Oh jezzzzz.. Well i dont like the pumps for this type of thing. I want to be able to sit beside the patient and medicate as I see they need it (with in the scope of orders, of course) . This way I know whats going in and then I could go from there... I would have been beside myself as well. I know I work 100% harder to keep patients out of pain, especially when they are passing.

Hey be ex. You have my sympathetic understanding. It is a bitter bread to eat when you have a patient in pain that could have been prevented. Its all good though. A learning experience for you as well as for all of us that share your pain. We're not perfect. Our hearts are so eager to comfort and relieve, but sometimes we find mistakes. God bless you, and don't forget all the patients who are so grateful that you were there to ease their pain.
