As leaders in health IT, we are all too well aware of the challenges involved in attracting and retaining top-grade talent. As we are confronted with ever more complex challenges in our health care landscape, we are finding it increasingly difficult to recruit people who can take leadership roles in moving projects forward and, simultaneously, be able to credibly interact with doctors, nurses, and other clinicians in our provider settings. How can we get in front of this conundrum and proactively bring the best and the brightest to our provider organizations?

Excellent article on tapping HIT talent! Thank you for posting it!
The wealth of talent available in capstone/internship programs, and health care informatics programs that partner with universities is immense. Places for organizations to tap into and utilize!

The author is a colleague of mine, a non- clinician who has always recongized the value that clinicians bring to healthcare informatics/ healthcare IT.
I also find it interesting that we have so many posters here trying to get their foot in the door of this specialty/industry and on the other side of the coin we have hiring managers within HIT/HIS trying to meet the every increasing need for both experienced talent and those with less experience but willing to learn.
The article was eye-opening in that hiring managers want various HIT talents even those willing to learn. I know of colleagues who would like to have students (healthcare or nursing informatics) assist them with projects. The challenge always is finding the students and/or healthcare professionals (who want to learn).
Is there a common place (e.g., web site, discussion forums, professional associations) where healthcare informatics professionals, students, hiring managers, and project managers (or anyone seeking students or professionals willing to learn) can post this kind of information?
The first thing that comes to mind are professional associations, such as ANIA-CARING, HIMSS, AMIA-NIWG, and Alliance for Nursing Informatics (which were mentioned in the “How to Get Started in Nursing Informatics” post and the article). These are places where students and professionals can network and discover opportunities and talents within their state and/or region.

Yes, agreed the HIMSS NI and ANIA-CARING listserves are good resources for networking between experienced and novice HIT/NI professionals. As I wrote in the article both organizations have annual conferences that provide an excellent venue for in person networking. Linkedin is also a good social networking vehicle.
