I'm going to be on a major budget! I was told by my instructor that I could use the 8th edition of Alcamo's Fundamentals of Microbiology vs the 9th edition. I am wondering if anyone here has seen these books firsthand and can tell me if they are virtually the same???
I am also wondering the same thing for a nutrition class I am going to start next week. The book for that class is by Whitney and Rolfes called Understanding Nutrition 12th edition. I am wondering if the 11th might be good enough also. I hate to scrimp this way but money is a big factor this semester and buying online is SO much cheaper than going to the bookstore :twocents:
Thanks peeps :)

I have no experience with the book you are going to be using for Nutrition and I haven't taken Micro yet. But I can tell you that for Nutrition, we were also tested over some of the info in the end of chapter articles. The same with my psych classes and I ended up with two different editions for psych. because I decided not to take the class after I had already bought the used book. The articles within the chapter where different. I would bet the same would be true for your books. I bet the info is nearly exactly the same but I'd be concerned about the articles. We would also have weekly discussions over these articles/research pieces.
Best thing to do would be to speak with your instructor and tell them you are able to get the earlier editions and ask if they will be okay. I know some instructors will say no but I have heard of people having their instructors okay it and I would bet that most of the time it is the difference in how their classes are structured, whether they use the specific articles or not.
If you are only able to get these books, I wonder if you would be able to get copies of the research articles from another class mate?
I just got off the phone w/my instructor and she told me that she's gone through various editions of the books. She gave the OK to go with an edition earlier for Nutrition and my Microbiology books :) :) :)
She said if there was any differences in the questions I could just ask a classmate if I could copy them. I can handle that so this works out great for me! I was wondering about the lab book and she also told me that the only difference would be at the end of the book which we will most likely not have time to get to.
I'm psyched! There's a huge difference between $395 and $105!

Also take some time to look in the library. You might be able to borrow the books for free.
Ha ha! I like your answer
It's nice to have your own book though :)
If your library does not have the book, you can get an interlibrary loan. This is how I prepared for Excelsior tests years ago.
Thanks!!!
Hey, money saved is money earned!
$395!!!.....Glad she OKed it!
I just happened to look through the box of books from last semester. (had checked online after I read your post, yesterday, for the last edition of the Nutrition book and I knew it didn't match mine). Anyway, I just looked at it and it was the same book, by the same authors, but the 9th Edition! When I went to the book store, last semester, to get the book because I couldn't find it online cheaper, I asked them how much a new one cost because this one was kind of rough around the edges and looked like (by the names listed in it) it had already been through about 5 people. They said they had never even seen a new, so they didn't know how much they were. I paid $85 for this one. I was going to offer to send it to you but mine was even further back then yours is going to be. I can see why if they are charging as much for them as you say.
