Teaching CEU's to nurses

So I had a quick question, as I do not recall this from my student days. What are the requirements to be able to teach CEU's to nursing staff? I am an APRN in a 12 bed ICU, and they are all very interested in me giving lectures and offering CEU's. Any advice is very much appreciated.

I had to go through my hospital's education department. Had to fill out a whole load of paperwork, including providing copies of the course outlines, objectives etc and my resume and licensures.

It depends on who your audience is and what, if any requirements you intend to meet. If it is just inhouse training for policies and procedures, no requirements. If for professional license CE for license renewal, you more than likely need a board of nursing CE provider number. If your place already has one, you're set--simply follow the BON regs for implementing a new course and make sure teaching staff meets the education requirements and you so inform the BON, if needed, about the course, including schedule, names and credentials of instructors and so forth.

If for LPN/LVN, license, again, make sure you follow the same procedure. In my state, a BRN provider number meets the LVN-Psych Tech deal, so nothing more is needed. For paramedics, EMT's or ER techs, a separate EMSA provider number is needed in my state.

If you intend to give CE's for APN's who are using those hours for certification renewal, check with the certifying agencies to find out their particular requirements.

A word of caution, always make sure you list a statement on the training brochure of what and for whom the CE will be applicable. This will prevent an RT, as an example, from comming unglued when he finds out that the RT board will not accept CE's from a training provider with a BON provider number. Make this statement, as well, at the beginning of your training. If you don't know if the BON provider number covers social workers CE ticket, simply say you don't know. That way, they will take the course at thier own perl.:twocents:
