I am an ER nurse, and my husband and I are considering a move to the Branson/Springfield area and I've been thinking about doing travel nursing at least for a while after we get there to get a feel of the different hospitals before I sign on permanently somewhere. Anybody have any warnings/recommendations about traveling companies/hospitals, anything? Any help is greatly appreciated.

The Ozarks are a beautiful place to live. Springfield is a nice sized town. The only down sides I can think of are the summers are very hot and humid and it's also in the bible belt with little diversity.
Travel jobs are hard to come by, but not entirely unheard of. There are two main hospitals in Springfield: Cox and St. Johns Mercy. Then Skaggs in Branson. Cox has an in house program to avoid paying for travelers. They pay around 35 an hour with no benefits or housing. I should also mention that RN wages start around 17 an hour for a new grad, but on the plus side the cost of living is very reasonable. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Good luck to you on finding an assignment. I live and work in Springfield at St. John's. They do not hire any travelers at all. I heard that Cox has in the past so you might want to call and check with them on the program the other person mentioned.
There are 2 other small hospitals in town, Dr.s Hosp a very small hospital and don't really know anything about them. They have changed hands several times over the years.
The newest hospital in town is yet to except patients and is a rehab hospital the will have vent patients. It's called Select Specialty Hospital. Know someone that is working for them and say the benefits are comparable to the the other hospitals in town.
The upside is that we have a major nursing shortage in this area so the is a large listing of openings at both major hospitals. Not to sound biased but I believe St John's is now paying better and has better benefits. Let me know if you want any further info.
