2007 summer externship

Hey fellow NY nurses and nursing students,

I recently (maybe even too late) thought of applying for a summer nursing student extern position. Does anyone around here knows of any program that still accepts candidates? I have called NYM, LMC and Queens Hospital but they all have filled their slots. So far I have left messages for Bronx-Lebanon, Woodhull and Jamaica Hospital. Elmhurst does not accept anyone who is graduating in May of this year. I am in desperate need of leaving my current job and working as a nurse extern to get extra clinical exposure outside of the school required hours and my last year's extern stint at the ER-NYM. Any information will be appreciated!

The deadline for all of the NYC summer externship programs were between February and early April. You may not be able to find an externship at this point, but might be able to get a paying position as a PCA if you have had past clinical experience.

Unless someone that accepted a position has to cancel at the last minute, you are going to be out of luck. As the poster above has mentioned, most of these positions were filled months ago.

And when are you actually graduating? You made mention of one facility not taking those that graduate this May. If you are actaully graduating this month, suggest that you focus on passing the NCLEX exam, and you then will be able to get a job and get more training in a new grad program. You will not get the same experience in an extern position. And if you have graduated, you no longer qualify for the externship. That is meant for students.
