I'm in the process of submitting my application to the paradigm nursing program (hospital based program) at Fresno City College, and I am having a huge dilemma. Before I attended Fresno City College, I went to Fresno State, for 2 semesters and let me tell ya, my GPA is far worse than most of the people in here. For my first semester, I had an overall of 1.0 GPA and I had to do a retroactive withdrawal, meaning receiving all "W"'s and was placed on academic probation. Now on my second semester, I did far much worse, I received an overall GPA of .07. Now before jumping to conclusions, I had a legitimate reason why my grades were horrendous. You see, my mother is a single parent of 3 who works two jobs just to make ends meet for us. She lacks the ability to speak english, and have no other financial support, because at that time I was still in high school and my younger siblings were in elementary. The moment I hit college, my life went downhill. My mom went sick for a couple of months which required me to withdraw from college to work full-time. When next semester came through, I figured it might be a fresh start for me, but in the middle of the semester, my mom had suffered a neck injury and i had to quit school again to work a full-time job to pay the bills at home. When taking care of my mom. After that semester, I was academically disqualified and was forced to not come back. I refused to give up on my education due to my families struggles. I went to my local community college one year later and now have an overall GPA of 3.8. All A's on my classes except a "B" in psychology and "B" in P.E. (yes i know that's embarassing). Now I'm looking at my application and it asks that I must submit all college transcripts and a GPA of all college courses taken. I was raised never to lie and i will send all of my college transcripts. So I'm wondering if I should submit a personal statement also (although it is not required) just hoping that my application to the nursing program won't get tossed and will be taken into consideration after seeing my accomplishments from a poor start in college. So wish me luck here guys!!!
