stethoscope class?

Published

Hi,

i read in one of my nursing journals there is a all day class on stethoscope assessment skills. Do you think this is worth the investment of time and money? I asked my job but i dont think they want to pay. should i just take it on my own? I would if i knew it was worth it!

Specializes in Oncology.

Didn't you learn how to use a stethoscope in nursing school?

ummm ...yes but this is about advancing my skills. What different sounds are, its hard for me to tell the difference between certain lung sounds and heart sounds. can you tell the difference in hear sounds ...murmurs? s1 s2? rales vs ronchi? I mean i have the basics..but figured i could be better?

I'd do some self educating before I shelled out money on this. I'm sure you DID learn all that stuff in school and just need a refresher. I'd look for sound tracks and diagrams online. That's really all you need.

I wouldn't pay for a class. Everything you need is likely to be online for free.

thanks...thats a good idea gonna look online=)

My agency pays for us to go to different seminars for ceu's. I went to that one - after having gone through classes to obtain my LPN then my RN - and there was numerous tips and things that were not ever covered in school. Besides, I feel that I am always learning something and no learning opportunity is ever a waste. The class was wonderful! Even though I feel competent in my own assessment skills, it definitely helped me sharpen my cardiopulmonary assessments. Some of it was basic and some more advanced, but it was presented in a clear cut manner seasoned with humor! If you have a chance to go - especially if your employer pays for it - you won't be sorry.
