state work study program available to college students

rep. tom gannon (r-delaware) reminds all eligible students attending a post-secondary institution that they can apply for the state work study program (swsp) to gain beneficial on-the-job training while earning money to finance their education.

the program, which is administered by the pennsylvania higher education assistance agency (pheaa), provides students with working experience in either technology or community service positions related to their academic major or minor studies. students who participate in the program may work up to 20 hours a week during the academic year and up to 40 hours a week during the summer or while on term breaks.

since the program enables the students to earn money it may help reduce the amount of money needed through educational loans.

to qualify for the swsp, students must be pennsylvania residents enrolled in an approved full-time education institution with a program study of at least two academic years. students must also be eligible for a state grant or a subsidized federal loan and not owe state grant refund or be in default on any other student loan.

application deadlines for the program are as follows:

2004-2005 academic year: oct. 1

2004 fall term: oct. 1

2005 spring term: jan. 15

for additional information, those interested are urged to visit the pheaa web site at www.pheaa.org and access the "work-study programs" link.
