Starting at PHCC ???

Published

Hello, I am a 31yo Male thinking about a career change from Insurance to Nursing. I am planning on the RN generic track. I will be starting 2 of my 4 Pre-Req courses at PHCC this week (HUN and CGS).

Anyway, I just wanted to get some input from current and future students, and also see who my classmates may be:

How competitive is admission to the RN program?

How did you prepare for the TEAS?

How do students without a medical background do in the program?

Is CPR a pre-req of admission, or of the program itself- I see it listed, but not under the course pre-reqs?

Thanks, and maybe we can start an ongoing discussion.

Take Care...TJ

I just want to say congratulations on the decision to become a nurse! I just started NS through SPC and I love it! The admission process is very competitive. They consider GPA (especially the sciences) and any pre entry testing. You can do searches for the TEAS and you can find practice exams. The Teas focuses on reading comprehension, math, and science. Make sure you are ready to take the TEAS bec their may be a limit on how many times you can take it within a certain timeframe.

You will need your CPR (BLS) card when starting the program. We have a portfolio and proof of the CPR card is in it. Our instructors can ask any day or time to view our portfolio and we need to have it on hand. It doesn't hurt to get it. That will be one thing off your to do list. I just want to wish you good luck!

You can call the nursing program administrators and find out what their GPA cut off was for their last admittance. You can also find out how many seats there are and ask which pre-reqs should be completed before applying.

Hi TJ,

I'm in the same classes you are (on-line) though these are my last 2 for PHCC and I'll be applying for the Fall 2010 program. Here's what I know from my experience:

How competitive is admission to the RN program? Very, just like every other nursing program in the area. See their website for the evaluation criteria...TEAS, pre-requisite GPA & In-county residency are all part of their scoring.

How did you prepare for the TEAS? The bookstore has a study guide from ATI that you can purchase or go to atitesting.com to their store to get a study guide and access to their online practice tests. You can take this test up to 3 times in one year, but they have to be 30 days apart - turn in the best score. Each time you take the test it costs $50 - payable at the college bookstore. I'm taking mine March 11th, allowing time to re-take before the fall application is due. If you don't need it right away, PM me (private message - you have to have 15 posts to do it though).

How do students without a medical background do in the program? I don't have a medical background, either, so we'll see! My boyfriend either (he was a bricklayer previously) but he's finishing up his LPN program soon. I think it just depends on your heart and how much you want to be a nurse.

Is CPR a pre-req of admission, or of the program itself- I see it listed, but not under the course pre-reqs? They recommend that you take it prior to starting the nursing program. So, after acceptance but before classes start for your term. I'm planning on taking it before August...probably in the summer (I'm taking 4 other classes as well - no time!).

Hope that helps! Let me know if there's anything else I can help you with.

Hello everyone, I just wanted to say that I am looking to get into the Fall '10 class as well. I spoke with an advisor the other day and she gave me some good info:

This is the first semester they are using the TEAS instead of the NET, so they really don't have a basis for comparison. She said that in the past, a score in the 80's on the NET would be a good range for acceptance. BUT, after searching on these forums for other TEAS scores, I see that a score in the 80's and above is competitive. As for GPA, she said in the past they would usually take 3.6-4.0, but it all depends on the GPA's of the applying class.

I am working on my prereq's right now and, so far, have all A's. However... I just took an A&P test on Wednesday and won't get the results back until after spring break :uhoh3: I hate waiting! So I can't even imagine how bad waiting to hear about admission will be.

As for the TEAS, I bought the study guide in the campus bookstore and it seems a lot like other basic testing books, but has more of an emphasis on A&P in the science portion. From looking on other posts, I saw that the TEAS didn't really have too many A&P questions but rather general science such as plate tectonics, rock formation, basic astronomy and things like that.

If you have any more questions, please feel free to PM me or just reply. I need to get up to 15 posts! :p
