What are the nurse /patient ratios around the country for inpatient surgical/orthopedic units and how do you staff for 8-12 surgical patients that are coming without starting the day with unacceptable ratios ?

    How many beds are on your unit and what is your matrix...what's the nurse/Pt ratio suppose to be? A staffing matrix can be a beautiful thing when followed! PS: my hospital has a staffing ratio of 1:5, 6 patients is really pushing it. This ratio is for all of the floors (aka med-Surg-Tele) outside of ICU, Stepdown, and specialty units (Peds, mother/baby, NICU, etc).
