Is anyone familiar with St. John's Regional Medical Center in Oxnard, CA? I applied there but would have to travel out of state for an interview. I'm looking for input about the hospital, good or bad, especially in their birth center (particularly postpartum). I've read a couple of patient revues and they were not happy at all with the care. I don't know if it's just one nurse who gave poor care or if it's a problem with the unit. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks. :)

I was born and raised in Oxnard, and actually ended up in St. John's emergency room as a patient in 2003 after I had fainted at work. I was born at the old St. John's campus, but this site was abandoned for a more modern hospital on Rose Avenue.

Oxnard's population is 70 percent Latino, so fluency in the Spanish language would be very helpful. Absolutely no offense is intended when I say that the women who give birth at St. Johns tend to be from a lower socioeconomic status (fieldworkers, undocumented immigrants, teenage moms, etc.), since the higher SES pregnant women tend to bypass this hospital for the facilities located in the neighboring cities of Ventura and Camarillo.

Thanks, that helps. I have no problem with the socioeconomic makeup of the patients. I just wonder how the management treats their staff, especially the nurses. I'm trying to keep an open mind, but the hoops I have to jump through to even interview make me feel uneasy.

My friend has worked there as a NICU nurse for more than a few years and hasn't mentioned any issues with working there...

Good luck!
