It is always best to ask the CRNAs that you personally know or work with to shadow them. You definitely have the perfect opportunity to be around CRNAs working in the SICU.

I can but I don't want my managers to know about my plans.

You don't want to be dishonest about it, but tell her that you want to understand the expand role of the advanced practice nurses that you work with on a daily basis. It will help your role grow as an SICU nurse.

I actually started by contacting the career advancement department at my hospital who then directed me to the manager of the OR via email. She was more than happy to coordinate an opportunity for me to shadow a CRNA, and helped me schedule a time to take the required OR sterility course. I came in on my days off to go to the class and shadow so I really didn't need to involve my manager in the process.

I emailed the managers of the OR where I work and eventually got Hooked up with a CRNA to shadow. I did not have to arrange anything with my unit manager at all.

I contacted the CRNA school I'm applying to and they set me up with the main person that they deal with in their main clinical rotation. They got me in no problem.

I'll tell you in about a month. Their deadline for the app is tomorrow, then interviews. I do think it'll look good that I shadowed within their system, though.

Got it thanks.

Working in the ICU, I had many opportunities to ask about shadowing CRNAS at our hospital. No one has ever had a problem with it and really enjoyed the teaching. I really didn't keep it a secret from my manager, but I didn't try and hide it either. My manager was very congratulatory when she learned that I was accepted into a program. Even if she knew I was trying to go to crna school, I don't think that it would have changed my responsibilities in my job.
