scope of practice

Published

Hello all, It has been a few years since I have been on this site.

Just wondering where I might find the scope of practice guidelines for an LPN in ma.

I ask because the facility I work for has a policy that states an LPN can remove a PICC line if trained and passed off. I was asked to do so, with no training, I specifically remembered an instructor in school telling us that an LPN may not do this in Ma. the staff development nurse called the BON and I was right. Luckily I declined to do so and had an RN remove the PICC. I got an admission today that is on IV solumedrol. I am unable to find info as to if that is in my scope of practice to administer as an LPN. I worked at a hospital while in school as a CNA and I thought I remembered the RN`s having to hang that for the LPN`s. this patient is on my assignment and I just want to make sure it is permissible per the state to do so. I do administer IV antibiotics and fluids through PICC, midline and peripheral. Any advice as to how I would find this out would be appreciated.

Wow, glad you checked! I know states vary but we are NOT to remove PICC lines anywhere in the US that I know of. My state just passed a law this year that LPNs were even allowed to touch PICC lines. We can now flush them, dress them, and administer certain meds. I would call your BON and see if they can direct you to a site with more definitive answers.
