Science Pre-requisite grades!??

Hi all,

I'm going to be applying to CRNA programs next fall. I've been out of undergrad since 2001 and have since received my BS and become a RN at Columbia.

I didn't take physics as an undergrad so I know I need that. My chem and O-chem grades in undergrad were all Cs.

My plan: over the next year working up to application time I'll take a chemistry, an O-chem, a biochem (maybe), a physics, and a stats (which I also took in undergrad and got an A).

My question for everyone: how old were your science/stats prereqs when you applied and how were your grades? How many schools did you apply to and how many were you admitted to?

Thanks!!

Applied to 2, waitlisted at one and accepted to one. ALL my sciences were over 10 years old, many 15 years old. I only had to take a recent Chem class for both and it didn't have to be organic. I just retook Gen Chem I and got a B in it.

My BSN gpa was 3.54, my first bachelor's degree was a 3.63, and my science GPA was 2.98.

They look at the overall person.

Dont waste your time retaking chem ochem etc. Not only will it be a waste of money but it will do nothing to enhance you application in comparison to other things you can do.

If you want to take classes, take MSN core classes. These prove you can do graduate level work and also slim down your MSN classes when your in CRNA school.

I dont know if your school requires you to have physics but none of the ones I applied to did. I was also told there was no need to take any physics, O chem or biochem (though i have them all). One class i noticed which was commonly asked for was stats.

I just dont see where taking those classes (especially the ones you already have) will be very helpful. Why not take MSN grad classes?

Well I am glad that someone asked about science gpas, because when I figured my science gpa out, it was a 2.9. I also have plans on applying for CRNA school next fall. It's that low because when I first started nursing school I fell asleep in class, and didn't do to well that first semester of A&P.

Not necessarily Mike, when I first applied I only had taken Gen Chem and had a C, all the rest of my sciences were A's. I was not accepted and in the interview they pointed out that Chemistry grade right away. So, I retook that course and continued on for my own good (not b/c it was required) through O-Chem and made all A's. Got in this time around. Was it just the Chem grades? Not likely, but it sure helped, and they pointed out the new grades as an asset.;)

Hey

Good for you and good point.

Im not saying it dosent look good, i just think that grad classes (which are a whole other level of class) will look better. None of the schools i talked to cared about the grades, they only cared that my GPA was > 3 and hat was it. The ones i interviewed at seemed very focused on my background and resume more than anything else.

I guess if you dont have the extras on your resume, then adding those classes might be helpful. Hard to say how admissions people think.
