Schoolcraft or Wayne State?

Published

I'm currently enrolled at Wayne State University. I'm almost 2 years into my pre-reqs here. They make you run the gamut before you can even apply but the degree is a BSN so that's not unexpected. :) There isn't a waiting list here, they select from a fresh pool of applicants every year but they only take the best, or so I've heard.

Lately I've been rethinking my selection in this school, university costs are adding up and I'm thinking that a BSN is something I can come back to after I have some experience as an RN. So I've been looking at Schoolcraft College, and I was wondering what the general experiences are with the program? How long is the current waiting list, how are the instructors, is the program in general easier to get into than the Wayne State program?

I basically just started going to the first university that accepted me and had a decent nursing program, and I'm definitely feeling now like that wasn't the best idea. I've already spent more in tuition here doing my pre-reqs than it costs to do the full nursing program at Schoolcraft!

Hoping to hear some of your experiences. :)

Schoolcraft has a very long waiting list maybe 2-3 years

I dont know if it has changed but I talked to a counseler in July 2011 and I was told there was a 5 year wait for schoolcraft. I took my EMT Basic, fire academy and Medic class at Schoolcraft and wanted to go back there for my Nursing since I had some classes already done. Yeah went and talked to the counsaler like I said and its 5 years. I kind of gave up on schoolcraft. If i were you just stay at Wayne State in the amount of time you would be waiting to get into the program at Schoolcraft you would be getting your BSN from Wayne State. But, who knows it has been 5 months since I talked to the counsler so maybe the waitist cut down a little bit.

The problem I'm having with staying at WSU is that there's no guarantee I'll ever get into the nursing program and it's really expensive. I figure even if I have to wait an extra year or so it'll be worth it because at least I know I will get in.

Any idea if there are schools in the metro area that don't have a long wait list?

I would go ahead and apply to wayne states program anyway who knows my may get in. Look at Wayne Community College, Washtenaw Community College, Oakland Community College. Washtenaw CC is like 2 years or 2.5 but washtenaw county residents have first priority for the program then out of county residents. Wayne Community does a point system and you have to take 12 credits there and teas test beore you can apply. Not too sure about other schools

Why dont you think you will get into Wayne State? I know what you mean about being expensive. I was thinking about going for my BSN but decided for my ADN first then going back for my BSN

It's very competitive. I know people who had a 3.5 GPA and couldn't get in.

Wow. Well, if I were you I would still apply to Wayne State, never say never. Just because they didnt get in doesnt mean you wont. I am not sure what your GPA is but apply to Wayne State still. Go ahead and apply to Schoolcraft, like i said it is a long waitlist 5 years but people do drop off the waitlist because they either got into another program, lost intrest, or decided to do something else so you may get in less then 5 years at Schoolcraft if ADN is what you want to do. But, I would check into WCCCD, WCC, HFCC, OCC, Macomb CC, Monroe CC, and other community colleges in the area and apply to as many as you can. I dont know how far you want to travel either. Have you tried looking into other 4 year colleges in Michigan with Nursing programs? You have Eastern Michigan University, University of Michiga, Michigan States University, Davenport University, Ferris University. Other 4 year nursing programs might be less expensive then Wayne State.

I am currently applying to WSU's traditional BSN program for Fall 2012. I moved here from CA and had to jump through a few hoops just to get my pre-reqs transferred.. I seriously got wayne-d haha, but I am also concerned about the gpa cutoff since it is so competitive. Does anyone know what the cutoff was for last year's application pool? I have also applied to u of d mercy but their waitlist is a bit longer than I am willing to wait.
