school nursing

I am looking into school nursing. I am an RN with med surg, OPS, GI, Pre-op, experience. I am looking for info on classes regarding pediatric assessment or school nursing. Wanted to brush up this summer. I'll start volunteering with school nurse at beginning of school year. Hoping to become sub.

I was wondering what motivated you to switch to school nursing... I have a friend that did the same and she enjoys it because of the lighter workload and schedule (home earlier, summers/holidays off) but she also had to take a huge pay cut. I thought I might also be interested but I do have to take the salary into consideration.

My children are 7 and almost 9. This is the first summer I did not have to agonize over childcare and we also spent 2 weeks at beach. It was odd not having to get back. It is a pay cut, although I feel the rewards and benefits out way. But that is an idividual choice. I want to be with children while they are young and also I can concentrated more on my family and supporting my husband who has a demanding job. The pay in Georgia is around 20 dollars an hour whether you are full time or just sub. Only difference is benefits. I made 30/hr in OPS and I worked about 3 days a week and took GI call nights and weekends. My plan is to sub, see if I enjoy it. I am looking for that rewarding feeling and want to genuinely try to pursue helping others. Thank you so much for your reply. Hope I answered your question. Probably too much info. sorry...Thanks again!!

maybe this website can help you out http://www.nasn.org. it is specifically for school nursing. it is wonderful that you are in a position to take a pay cut and put your family first. so many women wish they could do that but can't. i know quite a few school nurses and they all love their job.
