Scabies exposure

Published

I work at a rehab/ skilled nursing facility and I was recently exposed to scabies, (3 patients I frequently had contact with have been treated , one confirmed case). I thought nothing of it since I'm very good at washing my hands before and after contact with each patient and I literally wear gloves for everything. That is until my fore arms started getting itchy, I had no rash but was itching nonetheless. I attributed this itch to using the hand sanitizer as I would apply it to my forearms every now and then. I then began feeling little pin prick sensations which I again brushed off as I had experienced those before when I had a bout of eczema I thought maybe I was going through it again, still no rash. After treating a couple of patients and now one confirmed case and my continued itching and pinprick sensation I got prophilactically treated with permethrin by my doctor. Thing is now I still feel the pinpricks and now I've developed a crawling sensation(which I'm pretty sure is from the permethrin). My question is have any of you been exposed to scabies and how long did it take for you to be clear of them ?

How unfortunate you were exposed to the scabies!

I hope the pinpricks and other paresthesias are from the medication.

Per the Terms of Service, however, no one may offer medical advice.

There are many reputable online medical sites (Mayo Clinic comes to mind, for example) that offer information about how long a scabies infection would last; I suggest you peruse one or more of them, or ask your Healthcare Provider (MD, NP) for more information.

I hope you feel better soon.
