Routine Pit use in stage 4

I'm a student just starting my Maternity rotation and the facility I'm rotating to has standing orders for pitocin in stage 4 of labor. I was just wondering if this was normal? In class we were told you do pit only after other methods have not worked. Thanks!

I've only worked in two hospitals and it was standard in both. If bleeding is heavy or if it is her third or higher birth, I will get two bags of pit in before DCing the IV.
