RNs and LPNs

Published

I am currently taking care of my pre-reqs before applying to one of 2 nursing programs. This one particular program they put you on the list for the RN and LPN program. At first I had no problems with taking the LPN route, but I have been hearing LPNs are being phased out and are really only hired in Nursing Home facilities. Is this true?

Depends on where you live. In general, it would take a lot of doing to completely do away with LPNs. I would check the BON's LPN scope where you live and also do a job search and see what you come up with. In most states, it's a tough market these days; in my state it's especially hard for LPNs d/t an oversaturation of LPN programs, plus the economy, plus there was no real shortage here to begin with. I regret that I did not go straight through to get my RN when I had the finances to do so. I'm stuck at LPN and all the RN prereqs, plus waiting lists, etc. are just not appealing. If you have the means, I highly recommend going the RN route.
